How to reach Chitwan?
Chitwan National Park is about 150 km southwest of Kathmandu and can be reached by road and air. The most accessible entry point is Sauraha, a small town next to the main entrance of the park.
By tourist bus, car, or jeep from Kathmandu or Pokhara, the journey takes approximately 5–6 hours depending on road conditions. Tourist buses providing good comfort operate daily in the mornings from both towns with scenic drives over hills and plains.
If you would like to save time, it is possible to fly from Kathmandu to Bharatpur Airport within 25 minutes. From Bharatpur, Sauraha is only a 20–30 minute drive. Transfers from the airport or bus stop to your hotel or lodge are included in most tour packages.
Best Time to Visit Chitwan National Park
The best time to tour Chitwan National Park is from October to April, which is sunny and dry with nice weather for outdoor activities. It has day temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C with cooler nights, giving a perfect scenario for jungle safaris, bird-watching, and canoeing. Animal sighting is excellent as animals roam around more comfortably in open grasslands.
October to December offers clear weather and lush post-monsoon vegetation, while January to March is cooler and perfect for nature walks without the hot summer sun. It is a bit warmer in April but still a good time to spot wildlife, especially near water bodies.
The monsoon season (June to September) is not so advisable as it receives heavy rains, slippery paths, and limited access for safari, while the park becomes lush green and peaceful with fewer tourists.
Top Things to Do in Chitwan National Park
Chitwan National Park offers a lot of entertaining activities blended with adventure, wildlife sighting, and cultural experiences. Among the highlights is the jeep safari, where you have the privilege of venturing deep into the grasslands and forests of the park in search of one-horned rhinoceroses, Bengal tigers, wild elephants, and many other species. For something less energetic, a canoe ride along the Rapti River lets you float over marsh mugger crocodiles, gharials, and other water birds while the peaceful setting ensures that it is an unforgettable ride.
Nature lovers will enjoy the park's reputation as a birdwatcher's paradise, where over 500 species have been documented and await sighting. A jungle trek with a guide offers an up-close experience of the park's diverse vegetation and wildlife, and an Elephant Breeding Center tour allows guests to peek into conservation activities and catch a glimpse of baby elephants. Apart from nature, the Tharu village tour also acquaints you with the traditional Tharu community's unique tradition, crafts, and lifestyle, and the Tharu cultural dance show is an evening attraction, in which majestic costumes, rhythmic beats, and ancient dance forms enchant.
