Route Options from Gorakhpur to Muktinath

There are mainly two routes to reach Muktinath from Gorakhpur, one entirely by road and another that combines road and air travel. Both options offer beautiful scenery and different levels of comfort depending upon your preference and budget.

Option 1: Gorakhpur to Muktinath by Road

This is the route for you if you like road trips and enjoy the natural beauty of Nepal's hills and rivers.
Route:

Gorakhpur → Sunauli Border → Bhairahawa → Butwal → Pokhara → Jomsom → Muktinath

Start from Gorakhpur and drive for about 90 km to reach the Sunauli border, the Indo-Nepal entry point. Clear all your immigration and vehicle-related formalities to enter Nepal. From here, the distance to Pokhara is about 200 kilometers. The drive may take approximately 6-7 hours, passing the Bhairahawa and Butwal towns.

From Pokhara onwards, you head to Jomsom, which is some 160 kilometers further away. The road from Pokhara to Jomsom is rough and extremely scenic; therefore, you pass through Beni, Tatopani, and the Kali Gandaki gorge. Upon your arrival in Jomsom, you will have to take a local jeep or private vehicle for the last stretch of 25 kilometers up to Muktinath Temple.

This whole road trip would take about 12 to 14 hours altogether, depending on the weather and road conditions. It’s ideal for adventurous travelers who enjoy long drives and mountain landscapes.

Option 2: Gorakhpur to Muktinath via Air Route

Those who prefer comfort and speed would find a combination of road and air travel most suitable. First, travel from Gorakhpur to Pokhara by road. The journey takes around 8 to 9 hours, covering Sunauli, Bhairahawa, and Butwal. Stop over at Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, which lies on the way, and make a peaceful stopover.

From Pokhara, Muktinath helicopter flights or normal flights to Jomsom take just 20 to 25 minutes. Airlines like Tara Air and Summit Air operate daily morning flights, provided the weather conditions permit. Once you reach Jomsom, hire a local jeep to go to Muktinath, which will take approximately 1.5 hours.

Buddha Airlines airplane landing at Pokhara Airport with mountains in the background.
The combination of road and flight is much faster and comfortable. This route has a total travel time of 10-11 hours, including transfers. It is an excellent option for families, elderly pilgrims, and those who want to avoid long bumpy drives.

Option 3: Gorakhpur to Muktinath via Kathmandu

You can travel via Kathmandu in case you would want to visit the capital of Nepal before Muktinath.
The route is as follows: Gorakhpur → Kathmandu → Pokhara → Jomsom → Muktinath.

You can reach Kathmandu from Gorakhpur either by an overnight deluxe bus or by taking a short flight from Bhairahawa Airport near the border. From Kathmandu, the journey continues to Pokhara through a 6 to 7-hour drive or a 25-minute domestic flight. After reaching Pokhara, the journey to Muktinath remains the same, either by road or by flight to Jomsom, followed by a jeep ride.

This route is best if you want to explore both Kathmandu's cultural heritage and Pokhara's natural beauty before visiting Muktinath.
