How to Reach Kailash Mansarovar via Hilsa: A Complete Travel Guide (2025 Update)

If you are planning to visit Kailash Mansarovar but are concerned about how to reach Kailash Mansarovar and perform your worship? As, due to the recent flooding in Kerung, which has damaged the bridges which was the gateway to Kailash, and you are seeking alternative routes, you have come to the right place.

Here, we will discuss the alternate route to Kailash Mansarovar via Hilsa, a beautiful small village in Nepal that now serves as the new gateway to Kailash Mansarovar yatra, providing easy access to the pilgrims.

Why Kailash Mansarovar via Hilsa? Understanding the New Primary Route

In the past, the Kerung route from Nepal to Tibet was the most convenient overland route to Kailash Mansarovar. But the flood this year destroyed the Miteri Bridge, making it impassable.

The Hilsa route via Nepal's Humla district is the main entry point these days. While more challenging, it provides spectacular mountain scenery and a true Himalayan experience. Be prepared and know before you go, and that is why we recommend traveling with an established tour operator familiar with the region and the circumstances, like Everest High Pass Adventures.

Your Journey Begins from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj

The trip officially starts in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital. From here, you’ll take a domestic flight to Nepalgunj, a town in western Nepal that serves as the jumping-off point for the high Himalayas. Flights between Kathmandu and Nepalgunj run daily, usually taking about an hour. Given the remote terrain ahead, it’s wise to rest overnight here and get ready for the mountain flights.

Reaching Simikot, Gateway to the Himalayas

The second leg is a weather-permitting but scenic flight to Simikot, which is a high-altitude town around 2,900 meters. The flights can be delayed sometimes due to the weather, so you will need to be flexible. We always suggest that you have buffer days here to acclimatize and readjust before moving on.

The Helicopter Hop: Simikot to Hilsa

From Simikot, you will take a helicopter flight to Hilsa, which is at 3,640 meters along the Nepal-Tibet border. This helicopter flight, though short, about 20 minutes, is one of the most stunning, flying over rocky Himalayan valleys and streams.

Crossing into Tibet and Arrival in Purang

From Hilsa, you’ll be driven about 30 kilometers to Purang (Taklakot). Purang is the last stop before the sacred lake, offering basic accommodations and an essential acclimatization opportunity.

Sacred Stop: Lake Mansarovar

Lake Mansarovar, situated at an altitude of 4,590 meters, is central to the Kailash pilgrimage. Taking a holy dip and performing rituals here is a powerful spiritual experience.

Trekking the Kailash Parikrama

The Kailash Parikrama is a 3-day strenuous trek around Mount Kailash. Trekking over 5,000 meters requires good physical condition and adequate acclimatization. Many travelers hire the assistance of porters or horses. We strongly recommend you consult medical professionals before your trip, and never travel without seasoned guides who monitor your health along the way.

What You Need to Bring and Prepare for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

You will need to bring good equipment: warm clothes, quality boots, sleeping bags rated for cold, medications, and oxygen tanks. Document-wise, you'll need your passport, Chinese group visa, travel permits to Kailash, and Nepalese restricted area permits. Independent travel is prohibited; employment of recommended tour operators ensures all documents are properly in place and trouble-free for the Kailash Mansarovar yatra.

Having a Clear Understanding of the Costs and Duration

Generally, the entire trip takes some 14–18 days for $3,200 to USD 4,500. This includes flights, helicopter transfers, accommodations, meals, permits, and guides. During your yatra tour, it is suggested that you select operators who offer medical care, satellite communications, and oxygen, which adds enormously to your safety.
